3 low calorie cocktail recipes to beat the heat!
August is a notoriously hot month, and with this year’s heat wave scorching the East Coast and Midwest it is sure to be an extremely blistering thirty days. Reports from throughout the Midwest have recorded thousands of dead fish due to the lack of rain and high temperatures, and the weather forecast shows no signs of stopping (huffingtonpost.com). So, if you are anything like me, then you will be stripping down to your bikini or boardshorts and taking a dip quite often this month; even if your local watering hole is an intense 100˚F, it is guaranteed to feel better than the hot stagnant air.
For those of you in these areas, try my Floridian secret: bring ice blocks and throw them in. It will cool the area around you, or you can even just hold onto them so the cold water melts against your skin. This is how we used to keep our swimming pool tolerable.
For some, the water temperature might be tolerable, but the thought of being in a bikini is not. This translates into torturous dieting and sacrifices for most. Beer is known to cause bloating, and alcohol in general is called empty calories by most dietitians, which equals zero drinks for the remainder of the season.
Some sacrifices, like no fried foods, are just healthy choices in general, but others like no happy hours, are just plain no fun. I have created three different low calorie cocktail recipes with ingredients that are shown to help aid with weight loss. So, grab a shaker and drink yourself skinny!
1. Low Calorie Cocktail Recipe: Spiced Dog
1 ½ oz vodka
½ oz honey syrup
1 oz fresh grapefruit juice
1 oz club soda
Rim a chilled martini glass with the cinnamon. Add the club soda to the glass. Put the remaining ingredients into a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into the martini glass.
How it works: Grapefruit juice contains phytochemicals, which are thought to reduce insulin levels (webmd.com). The cinnamon and honey help stabilize glycemic levels so you do not feel hungry afterwards.
2. Low Calorie Cocktail Recipe: Hot ‘n’ Dirty Martini
2 oz stoli hot
¼ oz olive brine (low sodium is best)
Mixture of sea salt, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, fresh ground black pepper
The mixture of spices should be mostly paprika and pepper with a touch of salt. Rim half a martini glass with the spice mixture. Add the vodka and the olive brine to a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into the martini glass. Skewer a pepperoncini and place in the martini for garnish.
How it works: The olive brine and pepperoncini contain vinegar. The acetic acid in the vinegar slows the movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine, which makes you feel full longer (webmd.com). The vodka and the spiced rim contain capsaicin that is known to suppress hunger.
3. Low Calorie Cocktail Recipe: GTA
1 ½ oz lemongrass kai vodka
3 oz green tea concentrate
1 ½ oz apple juice
To make green tea concentrate brew the tea to double strength. Do not squeeze the tea bags out because it will release the tannins in the tea and make the concentrate bitter. Make sure to cool the concentrate to at least room temperature before making a cocktail. Add all the ingredients to a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
How it works: Green tea contains catechins which are known to increase metabolism and fat burning. It has also been shown to lower LDL cholesterol, also known as the bad cholesterol.
